Atwoli endorses Ruto’s NSSf deductions rise

With the passage of the NSSF Act, the Central Organization of Trade Unions in Kenya backed a hike in the NSSF deduction from Sh200 to 6% of gross pay.

The Sh200 reduction is the lowest in East Africa, according to a statement released by COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli on Tuesday.

“For this reason, we agree wholeheartedly with the proposal to raise the NSSF deduction from its current Sh200 to a rate of 6%. Not only is it the lowest in East Africa, but in the opinion of COTU, it has been severely undervalued for quite some time.” Atwoli elaborates.

He emphasized that COTU had a hand in shaping the NSSF Act and that the organization should now be a leading voice for broader social security programs.

As an illustration, “for instance, a worker who has worked for 30 years and is subject to an Sh200 monthly deduction may only take home Sh144,000 at retirement. As a result, pensioners risk falling into poverty with such a sum. A worker earning Sh50,000 per month for 30 years, with 6 percent deducted and top-up from the employer, would have Sh2.1 million waiting for them when they retired.” Atwoli expounds on the subject.

Workers will gain from the 6% increase, according to COTU.

He urged Kenyans to accept the 6% rate, which is legal and would benefit them in retirement.
