On Monday, his remains were laid to rest in an open coffin at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, where visitors will be able to pay their respects until 7 p.m. each night.

His resignation in 2013 made him the first pope to do so in six centuries, and since then he has mostly avoided the public eye, with just a few images appearing that reveal him to be physically weak.
