Mombasa court released five police officers on Ksh1 million bond after two years in remand.
Khalifa Abdullahi, James Muli, Joseph Sirawa, Edward Kongo, and Nelson Nkanae are accused of killing Mombasa tout Caleb Esipino Otieno.
After a public inquest by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), they were arraigned in court under Sections 386 and 387 of the Criminal Procedure Code, Laws of Kenya.
Otieno died in police custody at Changamwe Police Station, and the five policemen have been in remand since September after a bond request was denied.
According to witnesses, the victim was beaten at the police station when he asked why he was arrested.
“Otieno was taken into police custody at around 8 o’clock that night and jailed on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct.” said IPOA
To ensure the safety of the victim’s loved ones, the DPP approved the charges against the five suspects and ordered that the investigation be opened and conducted in Nairobi.
