DP Rigathi Gachagua criticised over DCI remarks

Published on

Vice President Rigathi Gachagua’s comments on the probe into fraud cases involving governors drew heavy fire from Kenyans.

Kenyans, led by Linus Kaikai, the editorial director of Citizen TV, and professor Makau Mutua, a spokesperson for Raila Odinga’s presidential secretariat, expressed their displeasure with Gachagua’s words, saying they would hinder the battle against graft.

Kaikai cautioned the new administration that corruption remained a serious problem despite anti-corruption efforts.

“The sentiments of the DP should be found disturbing. First, that hints at preferential treatment for governors or elected leaders suspected of corruption and secondly that government offices should be out of bounce for investigative officers.

The DP and the new administration should be drawn to undeniable facts. Government offices have been abused previously. All high-level cases such as Goldenberg, NYS have traced back to government offices,” he stated.

Makau Mutua, agreeing with Kaikai, said that Gachagua’s remarks showed the new administration was too soft on corruption.

“Gachagua’s remarks about the DCI are shocking. Governors and senior state officers aren’t above the law, and any qualified detective or police officer should investigate or arrest them for a cause.

“The DP believes crime investigation should have a hierarchy. Impunity,” he stated.

During the September 15 induction of newly sworn-in governors in Mombasa, the DP disclosed they had directed the DCI on how to investigate corruption cases involving governors.
