Ezra Chiloba gives network providers 60 days to act on deactivated lines.

Director General of the Communications Authority (CA) Ezra Chiloba has firmly denied a SIM card registration extension.

Telcos have been given a deadline of 60 days by Director General to verify that their customers are in line with the new guideline.

He clarified that the 60-day period was for network providers to take action against non-compliant customers by cutting off services including calls and internet.

By midnight on 15 October 2022, all mobile operators were required to update their users’ Sim card registration data. Operators are advised to take extra actions to guarantee 100% compliance in the next 60 days. 60 days is not an extension, but a term for mobile providers to take steps like denial of service to encourage greater compliance.

That was a summary of the official statement posted on the Communications Authority’s (CA) official Twitter, as shown below.

According to the Authority, only two telecom companies attained 80% compliance.

It is anticipated that the activity would safeguard telecommunication services to users and boost user trust in ICT.
