Fight erupts within Ruto’s UDA party over EALA nomination criteria.

    Published on

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA), headed by President William Ruto, has been shaken by controversy over the party’s nominations for the East African Legislative Assembly – EALA.

Importantly, the party’s preferred candidate for EALA elections will be chosen from among the nominees grouped in five distinct cohorts.

On the eve of a meeting with Ruto on Wednesday, discontent is rising inside the governing party, with certain areas pointing to betrayal in the EALA nomination process as the reason.

Reports indicate that President Ruto delegated responsibility for forming the cohorts to the Parliamentary leadership, headed by majority leaders Kimani Ichung’wa and Aaron Cheruiyot.

The suggested approach has been accused of being skewed toward favoring candidates from certain regions in advance of Thursday’s voting.

To what extent did criteria like these play a role? Were votes cast? A lawmaker from the UDA who saw the clustering lamented, “This was a plan to manipulate certain candidates.”

From a list of 27 candidates, political parties have narrowed it down to 9. The members of parliament will then vote on who will serve on the EALA.
