Gachagua’s Role in Ruto’s Government

Some of the executive responsibilities entrusted to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i during the former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s second term will be passed on to the Vice President, Rigathi Gachagua.

The Kenya Kwanza agreement stipulates that the DP shall, among other things, preside over cabinet committees and ensure that cabinet decisions are carried out across government ministries and agencies by the use of executive orders.

Gachagua will also improve ties between the central government and the devolved entities, which have been strained by disagreements over revenue sharing in the past.

“The deputy president will also coordinate the planning and supervise the implementation of development partners’ funded programmes and projects. He will coordinate constitutional commissions and independent offices in matters that require the intervention of the national government including but not limited to budgets and policy frameworks for their operation,” reads part the deal.

In addition, he will carry out President William Ruto’s directives.
