    Published on

After a fire on Saturday morning destroyed part of the Gikomba market, causing significant financial losses, Kamkunji MP Yusuf Hassan demanded that President William Ruto and Governor Sakaja proclaim the market a disaster area.

I’m appealing the President @WilliamsRuto and the Governor @SakajaJohnson
to declare Gikomba a disaster area, to set up a special fire fund, and provide urgent assistance to the victims of the fire. They need help to rebuild and restock and get back on their feet again.

    MP posted on Twitter.

Additionally, MP Hassan has urged the President to establish a special fire fund and offer immediate aid to the victims.

Nairobi County firefighter’s efforts resulted in the fire being extinguished, notwithstanding the damage.

The fire destroyed many buildings in the Gorofani and Bondeni estates, as well as the Dry Fish and Gashosho markets. The losses sustained by thousands of entrepreneurs are immeasurable.

Kenya Red Cross reported that the fire began at 1 a.m. near the Dispensary at Gashosho area.

The biggest open-air market in East Africa, Gikomba Market, has been afflicted by unpredictable fires every year.
