On Wednesday, February 1st, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki attended the official opening of the new Cianda Division in Kiambaa Constituency, where he made a surprise announcement that would change the life of one young woman.
Kindiki, who was there to celebrate the installation of the first Assistant County Commissioner for the Division, announced that he would employ a young graduate who had approached him earlier that day, pleading for a job. The young woman argued that the high rate of unemployment was leading to an increase in crime and drug addiction.
The young woman, who holds a diploma in Business Administration and a bachelor’s degree in Science and Business Administration Procurement, had her papers in hand and was seen in a video handed to Kindiki. The CS, who promised to work with Governor Kimani Wamatangi to provide employment for all unemployed youth in the county, emphasized that while he was happy to listen to the young woman’s problems, he warned the youth to stop using public meetings as a platform for job requests.
President William Ruto has also been working towards providing employment for the youth. In December 2022, he announced 11,000 employment opportunities for those in Nairobi and in October, he announced that the youth who worked in the Kazi Mtaani project would be contracted to plant trees.
Kindiki’s gesture was well received by the public and sparked hope for many unemployed youth. It’s a clear indication that government officials are listening and willing to provide solutions to the unemployment crisis in the country.
