Itumbi Awarded Sh630,000 for State House’s Failure to Follow Employment Law

In a recent ruling, former State House Digital Strategist Dennis Itumbi has been awarded Sh630,000 in compensation for an unjust firing by the State House. The Labour Court judge, Jacob Gakeri, stated that the government did not follow the proper employment law procedures during Itumbi’s termination.

Itumbi, who had been working for the state for over five years, was fired in March 2020 as part of a larger group of five government employees. However, he argued that his termination was conducted illegally by an unauthorized officer and that he had intended to continue working until October 2022.

The judge stated that Itumbi played no role in his own dismissal and had not received any warnings or disciplinary letters. The court found that, although the State House may have had valid reasons for terminating Itumbi’s employment, they did not follow the necessary procedures outlined in the Status Act of 2007.

Itumbi had originally been employed on July 9, 2014. This court ruling serves as a reminder of the importance of following proper procedures and treating employees fairly in any termination process.
