Japhet Koome Appointed to Replace IG Hillary Mutyambai

    Published on

Japhet Koome’s nomination as Kenya’s next Inspector General of Police has been endorsed by a joint committee of the Senate and the National Assembly.

On Wednesday, November 8, only one day after appearing before the committee for vetting, Koome was given the go-light.

Since Hillary Mutyambai resigned on September 13, Noor Gabow has been serving in the role in an interim manner.

On Tuesday, September 27, 2022, President William Ruto nominated Koome in line with the Constitution.

The police chief argued before the committee that he was suitable for the top post since he had worked for 31 years and had no disciplinary issues during that time.

In his defense, he pointed out that Mutyambai had entered the military two years after him and had climbed to the IG position after serving in the service for just 19 years.

Additionally, he claimed that his time in law enforcement preceded that of former DCI George Kinoti.
