Karua Challenges Supreme Court Verdict at EAC Court

    Published on

On Thursday, November 4, Karua and Khalif Khelef, director of Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI), wrote to the court, complaining that the supreme court had ignored their concerns about the August 9 election.

Petitioners argue that the integrity of the country was compromised by the decision made on Monday, September 5.

“Not only do we want the truth to be revealed, but we also want to make sure that nothing like this ever happens again during elections.” reads part of the letter.

Karau complained that the Supreme Court’s reform proposals for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) were ineffective because the commission’s previous errors were not penalized.

In addition, Khelef and Karua filed a lawsuit against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), claiming that the IEBC had neglected to fix the problems with its Voter Register that had been uncovered in earlier audits.

“The Court also ruled that the IEBC Chairperson had illegally overseen the election, although this ruling was similarly without legal ramifications. Name-calling and epithets were used in response to our requests.” reads the letter.

“There were questions about the Register that could have, and likely did, compromise the veracity of the results, which were announced under cloudy conditions despite a seemingly insignificant discrepancy.” stated Karua
