KEBS Suspends Top Cooking Oil Brands

Published on

In light of health concerns, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has temporarily banned the sale of ten different types of cooking oil.

KEBS issued a regulation that banned the use of certain types of cooking oil, including the brands Fresh Fri with Garlic Oil, Fry Mate, Bahari Fry, Fresh Fri, Gold and Pure Olive Gold, Postman, Rina, Salit, Tilly, and Top Fry.

KEBS said it made the decision after testing a few different kind of cooking oil.

It was stressed, however, that the hold would be short-lived.

KEBS further said that the cooking oils will be reintroduced to the market only if they were found to be compliant with the regulations.

That’s why it’s important for Kenyans to research their options before buying cooking oil.

To that end, KEBS laid forth the procedures Kenyans may follow to verify that their cooking oils were safe to use.

To get information on the manufacture of a product and the status of a permit, one should SMS the code (numbers) below the Standardization Mark logo to 20023 (i.e., enter message SM# Code or ISM#code, for local and imported items, respectively).

Part of the statement read, “Retailers should not purchase, stock, or offer for sale the products if the details are different, invalid, or not traceable to the platform, but instead report to KEBS through toll-free number 1545 during official working hours 8 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm from Monday to Friday.”
