Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) started executing President William Ruto’s orders to restore Mombasa port operations.
The KPA’s managing director, John Mwangemi, made a statement to the shipping industry on September 26, reassuring them that they are free to clear their cargo at any port and move it by whatever means they see fit.
Importers may choose to have their goods cleared at the port, at one of the Kenya Revenue Authority’s Licensed Container Freight Stations (CFSS), or at one of the Kenya Ports Authority’s Inland Container depots, and shipping lines have been asked to make this process as easy as possible for them.
He went on to say that this notification replaced a regulation from 2018 that mandated SGR usage by importers.
All imported goods bound for Nairobi must be transported via the SGR and cleared at the Inland Container Depot- Nairobi. In addition, Mombasa's port would be responsible for clearing all imported goods bound for Mombasa and its surrounding areas.
