Kimani Ichungwah: Internet Data Bundle should not expire.

    Published on

Internet service providers are advised to provide internet packages with no expiration, according to Kimani Ichungwa, the majority leader of the National Assembly and a Kikuyu member of parliament.

The lawmaker was concerned that many Kenyans were losing money because their internet packages were running out before they were used up.

The head of the majority advocated for internet service providers to follow the Kenya Power and Lighting Company’s (KPLC) token model.

“Internet use should only be charged for what you really use, like electricity. I want to request that the John Kiarie-led ICT committee see to it that Kenyans get to take advantage of inexpensive internet packages before Christmas.” Kimani argued.

Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan is the one who introduced the bill to regulate internet service providers (ISPs) in parliament.

To the House, Yusuf said, “I am requesting a statement about the expiration of unused data bundles and rampant internet speed limiting by internet service providers.”

Ichungwah, echoing Hassan’s sentiments, reassured the House, “If the bundles do not expire, it would benefit millions of poor Kenyans who depend on the internet and work online.”

Speaking to his parliamentary colleagues on Thursday, November 24th, Kimani said, ” Yes, due to the method of purchasing, internet access is incredibly expensive in Kenya. The minute you purchase weekly bundles and fail to utilize the package, they expire, and you wind up losing money.”
