Mercy Wanjau Ruto’s Cabinet nominee welcomes a pay cut if confirmed.

On Saturday, October 22, Mercy Wanjau, the candidate for Secretary to the Cabinet, said that if the National Assembly accepted her for the position, she would accept a salary reduction.

In her response, Wanjau addressed a query from Kikuyu mp Kimani Ichung’wah, who had asked about the difference between her present job’s gross income and that of the Secretary to the Cabinet.

You are earning an average of roughly Ksh1.5 million per month; at a time when everyone in the nation is demanding a raise, are you prepared to accept a salary cut?

    For clarification, Ichungwah questioned.

Her present job is Director of Legal Services and Corporation for the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).

I know that parastatals have different pay scales than the central government. But I’ve been in public service for years, and this opportunity provides a growth opportunity. Given the investment we’ve made as a family, I can make adjustments to accept this job.

    Wanjau answered Ichungwah.

While testifying before the Committee on Appointments, Wanjau said that her new position in Cabinet will provide her with a chance to progress after she has spent many years working in the parastatal sector.

Mercy Wanjau has 20+ years of experience as a public servant and is a well-respected advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

The current Secretary to the Cabinet, Joseph Kinyua, will be succeeded by her. President Uhuru Kenyatta combined the positions of Head of Public Service and Cabinet Secretary, and Kinyua served in both capacities.
