As of today, Aharub Khatri will preside over the Mombasa County Assembly as its new speaker.
At 1:30 p.m., the assembly clerk for Mombasa County administered the oath of office to him.
He was chosen without any opponents since the other nine people who had shown interest in the job failed to submit their candidacy papers in a timely manner.
Clerk Salim Juma of the Mombasa County Assembly wrote in a letter dated September 21 that just one candidate, Aharub Khatri, had sent in a properly completed nomination form together with the necessary supporting materials.
Ali Mwalimu, a radio journalist in Mombasa, as well as Mohammed Zuber, a businessman in Mombasa, and Derrick Odiwour, had all shown interest.
