On Sunday, March 12, a Mercedes Benz S300 crashed into a concrete wall in the Pangani Tunnel along Thika Road and burst into flames, killing the driver, identified as James Ogola, a Nairobi-based mechanic.
The Starehe Sub-County Police Commander, Fred Abuga, confirmed that the mechanic was driving his client’s vehicle when the accident occurred.
The news sparked an uproar on social media, with many Kenyans questioning why the mechanic was driving the car at midnight.
Some social media users shared their experiences dealing with mechanics, citing suspicious behavior, such as taking clients’ cars home without permission.
The owner of the Benz S300, Joanne Muthoni, spoke to the media and confirmed that she had taken the car for repairs on Thursday, March 9.
Muthoni expressed gratitude to those who reached out to her after the accident and grief for the mechanic who died on the spot.
She also affirmed that the mechanic was doing his job and that she had given him the go-ahead to test drive the vehicle if necessary.
