On March 8, 2023, the Police Chief of Nairobi, Adamson Bungei, denied claims that the increased security measures on roads leading to State House in Nairobi and Kisumu were a result of the 14-day ultimatum given by Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
Bungei clarified that the heightened security patrols were standard police procedure and not a response to Raila’s mass action plan.
He emphasized that police officers were deployed to protect Kenyans and ensure their safety as they went about their daily activities.
The police set up roadblocks on multiple routes leading to State House Road in Nairobi and to state lodges throughout the country.
In Kisumu, the police cordoned off the road leading to Jomo Kenyatta highway for a significant portion of Wednesday.
Raila’s ultimatum to the government, which expired on Wednesday at midnight, aimed to shield Kenyans from the country’s high cost of living.
