On Wednesday in sweltering Naples, stunning Napoli stormed away with a convincing 4-1 victory, giving Liverpool’s Champions League run the worst possible start.
Victor Osimhen set the tone right away by hitting the post in the first minute. Then, James Milner made a mistake and gave away a penalty in the fifth minute, which Piotr Zielinski calmly converted.
After a poor challenge from Virgil van Dijk was called for a penalty by VAR, Liverpool capitulated, giving Osimhen a chance to shoot at Alisson from 12 yards.
Liverpool got some breathing room after Alisson saved the penalty kick from the Napoli striker, but it didn’t last long. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s physicality was too much for Joe Gomez, who played for 45 minutes before being taken off. This gave Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa space to slide the ball past Liverpool’s helpless goalkeeper.
Things went from bad to worse right before halftime, when Osimhen got hurt and had to be replaced by Giovanni Simeone, who was left alone in the six-yard box to score Kvaratskhelia’s pinpoint cross.
This is Liverpool’s joint-worst loss in the Champions League, and it’s their third straight loss at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona under Klopp.
