The Political Parties Tribunal has issued a judgment that stops the initiative to reorganize the Jubilee Party’s leadership and suspension of Jeremiah Kioni until a lawsuit brought before it is resolved.
This comes after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) certified the suspension of former Ndaragwa Member of Parliament Jeremiah Kioni as the party’s Secretary General, which was met with opposition.
The verdict not only affects Kioni’s suspension but also has an impact on other leadership changes that were approved by National Executive Council resolutions on February 10.
The orders issued by the tribunal read in part, “Pending inter partes hearing and determination of the application, interim conservatory orders are hereby issued staying the Respondent’s decision communicated via the letter dated February 13, 2023, to the effect that the meeting was properly convened per the party constitution and further staying any consequential action by the Respondent towards effecting, adopting or ratifying the subject meeting resolutions.”
Kioni, who had earlier opposed his suspension, praised the verdict and criticized the effort to reform the party’s leadership immediately after it was issued.
He said, “We would like to congratulate those in the court who continue to believe that there is a nation and that institutions must be shown to be free and fair.”
