Raila Odinga’s Stance on ODM MPs Meeting Ruto

ODM party leader Raila Odinga made a surprising declaration at the Azimio Parliamentary group meeting in Machakos on Thursday, February 9th. The former Premier spoke out against elected leaders who had met with President William Ruto, who was declared the winner of the August General Election. Odinga initially allowed his allies to meet the Head of State, however, his views changed after the findings of a whistleblower provided evidence of election rigging in Ruto’s favor.

The Traitors of the Revolution

During the meeting, Odinga declared nine Members of Parliament (MPs) as “traitors” for working with Ruto despite the election rigging revelations. The former Premier called for the nine MPs, including Langata’s Phelix ‘Jalang’o’ Odiwuor, to resign from the party. However, accusations of double standards were thrown at Odinga, as former Narc-Kenya candidate Kabando wa Kabando posed the question of why Odinga approved secret meetings between former President Uhuru and himself in 2018, as well as between Nyanza region governors and MPs with Ruto in 2023.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna confirmed that he had received a formal request to deregister the nine MPs from the party and would be starting the process of reviewing the same. The paradox of party loyalty and the shifting political landscape in Kenya continue to be major talking points.
