Reasons why MPs’ allowances were cut off

Published on

Chairwoman Lyn Mengich of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has said that the decision to eliminate the Ksh8.7 billion sitting allowances for Members of Parliament was made in accordance with the principles of justice and fairness outlined in the Kenyan constitution.

On Saturday, August 27, Mengich said on Citizen TV that everyone should be paid the same if they do the same job.

She emphasized that after the sitting allowances were included in, the pay would be comparable to that of a Cabinet Secretary or a governor.

Mengich noted that a number of considerations needed to be taken into account in order to guarantee that the legislators who were going to take office following the elections on August 9 were going to get a pay that was commensurate with the job that they had done.
