Ruto canceled his promise to employ 116,000 teachers.

Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, revealed that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will hire just 30,000 teachers in January 2023 as opposed to the 58,000 planned to address the teacher shortage in public schools.

President William Ruto had pledged to hire 116,000 unemployed teachers in his first year in office during the campaign.

CS Machogu elaborated on why the President’s pledges could not be fully realized in the current economic environment.

Machogu hopes the new hires will help fill the gap in the teaching staff, particularly as the sixth-grade class prepares to move on to the junior high school level.

Following the President’s directives, “when we open schools in January 2023, our pupils who are doing their CBC examinations will know whether they will be hosted in primary or secondary school,” the CS said.

“We are aware that we committed to hiring 116,000 teachers in the next school year, but due to the state of the economy, we will proceed gradually.”

At a meeting with school administrators on November 17 in Kisii School, Machogu said, “So come January, we are going to hire 30,000 teachers and will improve afterward.”
