Ruto eliminates the Electricity Connection Fee

    Published on

New users will no longer have to pay Ksh70,000 to connect to Kenya Power (KPLC), as revealed by President William Ruto on Friday, November 11.

The President has affirmed that there would be no cost to connect new customers to the national grid.

“A transformer meant for 30 people barely served 15. Why not connect everyone for free because the transformer is underutilized?” Ruto questioned.

When speaking to the Kenyan Association of Pension Trustees and Administrators, Ruto said that the fee was unnecessary under his government.

In order to implement his vision of a “digital superhighway,” the president plans to launch a rural electrification initiative that will be integrated with high-speed Internet access.

The initiative, which Kenya Power unveiled in December 2021, aims to capitalize on the country’s rising mobile data consumption by bringing high-speed Internet to homes in remote areas.

KPLC plans to provide internet access using fiber-optic cables affixed to its transmission lines.
