Sakaja declares free transportation for school-aged students.

    Published on

Johnson Sakaja, governor of Nairobi, has ordered free public transportation for all school-aged children in the county.

During a November 18 meeting with matatu drivers in Nairobi, the governor issued the order.

However, according to Sakaja, students may only make use of the service when dressed in their school uniforms.

To guarantee that students and matatus are not arrested for transporting additional passengers, Sakaja said at the announcement that he had been in contact with traffic police.

There are thousands of children in the county who have to go to school every day, often in less-than-ideal circumstances, and this order will help them out.

Nonetheless, Sakaja did not provide the launch date for the new intervention.

He also did not say whether or not the matatus would provide the service for free or whether the county government or taxpayers would be responsible for paying for it.

Sakaja’s latest order is in line with the promises he made during his campaign to boost school lunch programs.
