The decision to combine HELB and the universities’ funding has been met with opposition from students.
Melvin Thogo, president of the UNSA at the University of Nairobi, has said that the proposal would not solve the university’s financial issue.
The two organizations should be combined, according to President William Ruto’s education charter.
While at first glance this may seem appealing, it is really the simplest method by which students may be dispossessed from this fund, as stated by Thogo.
If this passes, Thogo said institutions would use the revenue for other expenses.
She said that “the university administration would surely utilize these monies to pay for its expenses first before disbursing them to the students,” which might result in a smaller or nonexistent distribution to the students.
